While the volume is cranked to 11 with breaking news, journalists forever need to practice their craft quickly. All learn very early that being both fast and correct, plus making every deadline, are essential skills if one hopes to last even a week - much less 25 years - in this profession.

I'd personally add to that trio of talents, an ability to be creative on demand, which includes eliciting powerful tape from interviewees and crafting compelling copy. This is my goal with every piece, to be a speedy storyteller versus a sleepy fact-giver, including my spot news packages.

As with the examples below, I may not always score a game-winning journalistic home run, but it is my constant ambition. You get to play umpire and tally keeper.
